In Tanzania, primary school is free but secondary school fees alone range from $50 to $100 per year. For this reason, many villagers who live as subsistence farmers are unable to send their children to secondary school. If they can send a child to school, they often choose one or two boys in the family. Annual school fees do not include uniforms, shoes, pencils or notebooks - all of which contribute to the obstacles mounted against youth who dream of the opportunity to continue learning.

In Tanzania, primary school is free but secondary school fees range from $50 to $150 depending on the level, exam fees and uniform needs. Many families support their families through subsistence farming (small scale agriculture) and therefore have very limited income. If they choose to invest in the their children's education, they often choose one or two boys in the family to send on to secondary school.

Project Wezesha supports children through the provision of secondary school fees so that children who would otherwise not have the opportunity for continued education can continue their studies. Beyond secondary school, we intend to support our secondary school graduates through high school (if they pass secondary exams) or as they participate in a vocational training program. We also support them with after school tutoring, textbooks, and solar powered lanterns so they can study after dark.

Long-Term Impact

The long-term impact of our scholarship program is a return on investment for the village. The children are empowered with increased education. They develop their English language proficiency, which increases opportunities for work in various sectors (e.g. technology, education, tourism). Hopefully, they bring their big ideas from school back to the village where they can be game changers in their communities.
