Young girls are primary victims of the poverty that plagues rural villages in Lesotho. HIV and AIDS has turned them into orphaned caretakers of their families. Prevalent poverty and hopelessness leaves them vulnerable to dropping out of school, early marriage, teen pregnancy, and re-entry into the cycle of poverty. Smart Ladies Society programs keep our girls in school and show them the benefits of positive self-image, responsible personal conduct, critical thinking, and being well informed.
The Smart Ladies Society has to date worked with over 150 girls. The funds will pay school fees for the neediest of our girls. We will also be able to continue our self-confidence, goal setting, financial savvinness, healthy relationships, sex and reproductive health, and careers programs. The school fees and the extracurricular sessions will keep the girls in school, and keep them focused on building brighter futures.
Our programs strengthen and empower our girls' minds. This will in the long term help them not to succumb to their current situations, and also help them break the poverty cycle.
