Project #25293

Educate&Mentor children in Korogocho Slums, Kenya

by Literature Africa Foundation

Literature Africa Foundation runs a project dubbed "The ILead Program" which supports the education of children in rural areas and urban slums of Kenya. We promote literacy through provision of school text books, exercise books, stationery and other teaching resources. We supplement school tuition through after school programs that provides mentorship on life skills, talent development and education.

Literacy levels in rural areas and urban slums in Kenya remain very low despite the government offering free primary education. Korogocho is very vast and overcrowded slum where unemployment rates and poverty is very high. Many children do not go to schools and prefer to work in the surrounding dumpsites to earn a living because they do not attach value to education. Girls do not attend schools for a week on average during their menstruation period.

Through Literature Africa Foundation's ILead Program, children are provided with books and school uniforms, taught the importance of education in alleviating poverty, taught how to read & write, how to embrace their talents, how to express themselves through creative arts and equipped with life skills to enable them to become all-rounded individuals in the society.

Long-Term Impact

If children are supported through education, taught the importance of education and mentored on life skills, they will work hard to become successful individuals. Education is the key to alleviating poverty, building sustainable cities and communities and opening up employment opportunities for youths.
