Amiya Biswas, paying it forward
Amiya Biswas lives with his wife and 14 year-old boy. Amiya never used to like his wife. He was a habitual drunkard and gambler. After drinking he used to beat his wife very badly.
Nishtha is all too familiar with such scenarios and has formed a women and adolescents group to fight against domestic violence. These groups also motivate others to stop domestic violence.
When the group members came to know about Amiya, they went to his house. They started making Amiya aware of the bad impact of the domestic violence on his wife, children and his image in the community. They also reminded him that it is illegal to abuse his wife. It took continuous effort by these groups to ensure that Amiya stops his behaviour.
Not only did Amiya stop domestic violence but also curbed his habit of drinking and gambling. This change led to a happy and peaceful marriage.
Presently, Amiya and his wife lead a happy life and they have become active volunteers in the fight against domestic violence. They are now helping others to be free from abuse.
During a meeting organised by Nishtha where state level government officials along with others were present, Amiya said sorry for his actions and expressed how he is proud to be an active volunteer in the struggle against violence.
