Educate a Child - Report

EDUCATE A CHILD 2017

During 2017, UNHCR continued our partnership with the Educate A Child (EAC) Programme of the Education Above All (EAA) Foundation. We have again successfully delivered a wide range of EAC activities across the 12 countries targeted due to having high numbers of refugee children out of school

Education is crucial in the life of these children as it helps them to have a better future, provides security and in some cases it assures that children eat a meal.

By providing school infrastructure and equipment, better trained teachers, more learning materials, and the right support for children who have been forced to flee their homes, we helped over 350,000 more children to attend school – and we have now welcomed over 1.2 million children into school since our programme started in 2012But we could not have achieved this fantastic achievement without the incredible support of our donors.

The programme proved vital for helping children caught up in conflict to continue their studies against all the odds. In Syria alone, we were able to reconnect over 168,000 children with school through catch up classes designed to help them re-join school at the appropriate age levelAnd in Uganda, conflict-driven mass displacement saw us rapidly scale-up our activities when the conflict in South Sudan resulted in more than a million people fleeing there during 2017We had originally planned to support 9,980 children in Uganda through the EAC programme – but instead we reached over 96,000 school age children, helping them to keep their lives on track despite losing everything.
