Challenge

The LRA Barlonyo massacre on Feb 21, 2004 killed 301 villagers and burnt the IDP camp to the ground. Children of Hope Uganda's vocational school is training the traumatized survivors, many of whom were abducted and forced to be child soldiers. The current inadequate school kitchen relies on charcoal for cooking fuel, which is too expensive and harms the environment. The new biogas kitchen will connect to the biogas extractor system just installed to new latrines built by Rotary International.

Solution

The new kitchen will operate on cooking fuel provided without cost from the newly installed biogas extractor attached to the school latrines. This environmentally sound solution will save trees and save the considerable expense of buying trees to make charcoal. The graduates of the vocational school will use their skills to start small businesses or find work as trained carpenters, bricklayers, tailors or farmers, benefiting the whole community of about 1,000 villagers.

Long-Term Impact

The new biogas kitchen will feed the 100 current vocational students, the 150 nursery school students and the 31 staff and teachers. The whole community of about 1,000 villagers will benefit from the skills training and education of the students.
