Just a quick reminder for you :-)

The gift of an education is more than our girls ever dreamed they could have. YOU give them this AND their education will educate so many more.

Did you know that 66 MILLION girls are not in school globally?

CW girls are lucky thanks to people like you, who do care and step forward to make a difference.

                                        THANK YOU!!

It is early morning and our girls above are waiting for the Chicuchas Wasi school van to take them to school. This safe transportation and the programs listed in our last email are what make Chicuchas Wasi School unique. We go beyond the basics and teach our girls to reach beyond the stars for their dreams and not let go.

Greeting to our Chicuchas Wasi Friends

YOU give new life, opportunity and a bright future to these girls

YOU have made such a huge difference in the lives of the girls we serve at the Chicuchas Wasi School and to show our appreciation we try to keep you as current as possible on our website, Facebook and these emails where we include you in all of the latest news and achievements. Your loyal support is heartwarming and we want you to know what you allow us to accomplish with your donations. You probably wonder exactly how we use your donations to educate girls at Chicuchas Wasi School. We never lose sight of our focus to educate and empower our girls to be prepared to be the change makers for their society and their families. For equality for girls is the future. Our school offers the best academic classes and we use many interactive and creative ways to engage our girls and spark their interest, all free to the students at the CW school. Girls selected to attend CW are unable to attend public school due to poverty, gender bias, and distance from a public school. I might add that their mother language is not Spanish (the language that is used in public schools) but the Quechua language, the language of their families and communities, that limits them in a system that does not value this language. Without the Spanish language it is impossible to survive in public school.

                                    THANKS to YOU
Our girls are able to go to school and their futures will reflect their education.

In addition to quality academics, we include in our curricula:
- Spanish, Quechua and English languages
- We stress values for a quality life of respect and dignity
- We encourage expression and curiosity to develop self-confidence and self-esteem
- We use art to teach students to think outside the box and learn the value of working together to reach their goal (ex. making costumes to act out Inca history - in photo)
- We provide a hot nutritious daily meal to girls who often lack basic nutrition at home due to poverty
- We provide safe transportation to and from school for all 110 girls ages 4 to 12 and our attendance is excellent at 99%.
- We promote the value of girl’s education to their families, communities and the society by participating in cultural events, parades and marches
- We include parents and the community in the development of CW school and welcome their support and hands-on special projects by parents
- We encourage artistic talent with poetry, music, dance and theater to tell a story, demonstrate a value or make a statement to student body and parents
- Most important is the constant flow of love and support that permeates the entire student body and staff and creates peace and safety for all
- We show them the incredible Quechua culture that runs through their veins and to be proud of what their ancestors have given society
- We train our well prepared teachers beyond academics, to support our incredible girls, often the first in their family to be educated
- The CW team is passionate about educating girls and this energy is contagious to all who visit us
- We teach students/parents the importance of good nutrition for healthy bodies and minds and are raising Guinea pigs to supply protein for school meals with the help of the parents
- We encourage student classes to pick up litter as an example for their community on how to protect the earth

The programs above are what make Chicuchas Wasi School unique. We go beyond the basics and teach our girls to reach beyond the stars for their dreams and not let go.

I am sure there is more to add to the above that I will recall as soon as this is mailed to you. Please send any questions to me and I will do my best to answer them: chicuchas_wasi@sonic.net.

For all of the school programs above and more
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU
from our 110 girls whose lives you have changed already.

Greetings to YOU, our loyal champions for Girl's Education,

In response to your requests, we invite you to journey with us to visit the Chicuchas Wasi School and meet the girls whose lives will be better because of the gift of education you give them with your donations. You will also explore the wonders of incredible Cusco, The Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu guided by our own CW Board member Efrain Valles who is a seasoned member of the CW family since he was 8 years old. This is a special THANK YOU opportunity created just for you. You will have the opportunity to meet the Chicuchas Wasi girls face to face and get to know them. Please see http://www.chicuchaswasi.org/ for more about the tour and school.

Efrain Valles you may recall from earlier reports, joined CW in 1989 when CW had a shelter for abandoned children. He is a professional Tour Guide and family man with 3 children today. Efrain is passionate about CW school and education for his daughter and the CW girls. He grew up in CW and understands more than most the hurdles these girls must overcome and they know and love his big heart. He is an amazing man and works hard for our girls.

Inti Raymi student history lesson enactment
Inti Raymi student history lesson enactment
The hardest part of teaching is to capture and hold the attention of the students.

YOU are our champions for girls education. CW 2015 is well under way, 3 months into the school year and the girls are deep in the learning process using the CW style of teaching you make possible with your generous donations for their education.

CW's 110 girls send you hugs and kisses, their expression of Gratitude, for the life changing gift you give them -- AN EDUCATION!

                                         Muchas Gracias Amigos

Capturing student attention and holding it is difficult, but necessary for learning and creative Interactive learning is what we focus on with most subject matter and the results are terrific. The arts when incorporated into the subject lesson, get immediate attention and deliver easily those lessons directly to the girls. History lessons for example are often acted out with class made costumes, students do research for the story they will act out and a school history performance is created by several or all classes, then shared with all of the student. Everyone learns the history lesson and learning about their history is fun. Creative projects teach girls to think outside the box and dare to reach for something new and different.

The CW style of teaching really does work!

One example is the enactment of the 'Inti Raymi' (Festival of the Sun) a religious ceremony of the Inca Empire in honor of the god Inti, one of the most venerated deities of the Inca religion. It was a celebration of the Winter Solstice. Students create their costumes out of recycled materials and research the history to learn the details needed to act it all out. See image of the 'Inti Raymi' history lesson.

Mathematics is another subject where the girls engage with a practical lessons around shopping for food. We use mostly packaged goods for convenience, but teach about buying bulk items like rice, beans, lentils etc. that must be weighed out and priced per kilo. The girls set up a market in the school and using play money learn to quickly calculate the cost of something and the exchange of bills for coins in their heads. The students then go home and teach their families. Many mothers with little math skill are often cheated at the open market since they do not have these skills.

The understanding of mathematics is a daily need for us all. Chicuchas Wasi must also balance CW School  expenses with the available funds. Every year the CW board must answer this question: Is austerity needed this year or are we able to fund all of our programs? So the practical lessons of managing money are included and the students take home these lessons to share with their families. See image of the classroom food store reality lesson.

Teaching our girls to think out of the box continues when the two kindergarten classes create a Mother - Daughter project to create something to wear out of recycled materials. They set up a Runway for the girls to model their creation for the school on the National Day to honor Kindergarten students. The bonus is a deepening relationship between Mother and Daughter. Very creative outfits indeed! See the creations photos.

Please DONATE today and keep110 girls in school and thriving

What does it COST for 110 GIRLS to go to the CW SCHOOL?
And some answers to your other questions.

I know we ask you for donations to keep our 110 girls in school and thankfully you respond as you are able. CW is immensely grateful that YOU value our cause. THANK YOU!

Our new website will provide the financial information below going forward. Several times a year we ask you to donate during the special GlobalGiving promotions http://tinyurl.com/nbbhaz4 . We will let you know when they will occur in advance so you can mark your calendars with the date & start time.

How we plan and manage our school finances. We start our fundraising campaign late in November each year for the school operating budget for the following school year. The CW school operating budget is $152,000 this year, not including our special fundraiser on GlobalGiving for a second school van that will cost $75,000 and we desperately need.

                             The CW financial reality today

This Year CW has raised $19,575.00 on GlobalGiving, $11,816 from donations and other fundraising efforts and $60,000 from an anonymous foundation for a total of $91,391. as of April 2015.

The balance to raise this year is $60,609. for the school operating budget for the 2015 school year. We really appreciate your donations to keep this free education available to these girls and pay our teachers (60% of our budget)

Back to School for CW Girls - Happily
Do CW girls LOVE school?   YES!!
By Rosa and Rae Lewis, Board members

What do these faces tell you?

Just one look at CW girls says it all!

These 11 year old girls are full of joy and pride to be able to attend a school created for them, that provides more than just a curriculum. To many of our girls, CW is a second home where they feel safe and loved.

It was 4 weeks ago that our students arrived to start the new school year, wearing their freshly washed uniforms, all smiles and excitement to be returning. It is a bittersweet feeling for some, because they know they are getting closer to graduating and leaving their beloved CW school where they have established a special connection with their teachers and classmates.

                                               THANKS to YOU
                                       They have this opportunity.

The girls shout out a big thank you for their book bags filled with this years workbooks, pens and pencils for their grade level.

Many of our girls come from parents who never had an opportunity to attend school and therefore they barely read or write. Our girls are grateful and lucky to have a school that provides books and their school supplies. CW school cultivates the love of reading and in those book bags each girl found a special book called "The Dreamer."  We teach our girls to dream big and having a book of their own on that topic was the highlight of that day.

THANK YOU                                                           is not enough to express the appreciation we have for YOU.
