Our 4 y/o newbies adjusted now to school
Our 4 y/o newbies adjusted now to school
LOVE like air spreads at CW filling every heart, every day, rain or shine
CW School for Girls begins every March with 4 year old Quechua-speaking girls who never heard the word school before. They are paired with an upper grade CW girl to lovingly ease their passage into this new sometimes scary and unfamiliar CW world. The 6th grade girls who will graduate in December and move on to high school and later the University that awaits them are new role models for our wide-eyed little ones. Many possibilities will begin to creep into their awareness and  open to them when they hear the older girls talk about their dreams for the future.

How did all of this begin?

We have a plan to ship 40 signed books to the UK at a big shipping discount ($5.50 per book) from California. To proceed we need to have preorders paid to the CW UK friends organization (Director is Stuart) so that we won't ship too many books.
Please contact Stuart in the UK

so we can proceed. This is a fundraiser and the only way to raise funds for CW is to buy books directly from the CW nonprofit – not from a bookseller who is focused on their own profit.

                                            *************************
I am always asked why did you create Chicuchas Wasi?
Since I founded www.ChicuchasWasi.org  32 years ago, I have been asked again and again: What was it that made you decide to create CW? Why the Peruvian Andes? Weren’t you afraid to leave your home, solid nursing job, community and family and move there alone, with no Spanish, no friends and the 13,000 foot altitude?

In your lifetime have you ever felt an occasional fleeting inner gentle and loving call to pay attention to something that might be important to you? Did you notice it didn't go away? Did you trust it and leap into the unknown? Or ignore it.

When I was 41 years old I felt a strong inner call to an unknown something I did not understand but could not ignore. I finally surrendered to this heart felt call, trusted and leapt into the unknown - scared - and my life changed forever. I fell in Love with a group of ragamuffins living on the streets of Cusco.

My just published book, "Jump on the Love Train" is about that experience and how CW came to be. I have 1000 books ready to mail to you. To order go to www.chicuchaswasi.org/book/  Muchas Gracias  -Rae

                            Thank you
The first complete new CW primary school was in 2013 and that year CW graduated 11 girls, promoting them to the public co-ed high school. There were no warm fuzzies at the new public school. The girls returned to CW emotional and asking for support and to remain part of CW family. The Alumnae Sisterhood was created to mentor, guide and support our Alumnae girls. The girls suffered a tragic loss of a promising classmate 3 years later and they grew up more determined than ever to reach their dreams. These 10 CW Alumnae girls ALL completed the 5 years of high school, graduated and their current achievements are the best news ever.

Want to know the CW IMPACT?

                                                  ARE YOU READY?
Of these 10 CW prepared Alumnae girls: two passed the competitive University entrance exam and are attending Cusco University; four entered the Cusco Vocational College; and the remaining four are taking additional classes preparing to retake the University entrance exam. They all stayed in school (despite the constant family pressure to quit and go to work.) They are the first in their family line of women to ever do so.  We are so proud of our CW Alumnae and know you are too. This is our mission, to raise the girls up.

Carnival fun - 4 y/o girls dance around gift tree
Carnival fun - 4 y/o girls dance around gift tree

LOVE and JOY fill the air and hearts of our CW girls every single school day...

It's Carnival time in Latin America and one way or another every fun-loving Peruvian will jump into the fun. CW is no exception, however, we keep it mellow and don't allow girls to throw water balloons at each other. CW girls dance for each of the Andean communities around a pretend gift tree (full of air balloons) and show off their costumes and festive mood. We begin with our youngest 4 y/o girls and then grade by grade the other dancers follow. Each grade chose the music and created the choreography for their dance around the tree. All over Latin America all ages are celebrating and if you see pink and green flour flying through the air and loud laughter it is best to escape as fast as you can. Tourists are a favorite target to soak and dust with colored flour.

As the dancing was ending, Alejandro our psychologist and Simeon our bus driver appeared with spray cans of foam and sprayed the teachers to the delight of all present and white foam was everywhere. The pink flour powder flew over everyone for a bit..they were all having a great time, especially Alejandro and Simeon – adored by the girls. I stayed out of that mess, but enjoyed watching them all play carnival.

Fun was had by all. You can tell by the happy faces of all the teachers, psychologist and bus driver lined up in the bottom photo. Cleanup was easy since the white foam and the pink flour just blew away.

Teacher Haide gives special attention as needed
Teacher Haide gives special attention as needed

Every March we celebrate women and girls globally and especially on March 8th -  International Women’s day. Our mission for the school is to empower and educate forgotten indigenous girls of the Peruvian Andes. After 31 years serving children of Cusco, I find myself reflecting on the question I have been asked all these years: WHY? and HOW? did you do this. To document our CW history and to think about those questions on paper, I began to write the Story of Chicuchas Wasi and the result is the CW book, ‘Jump on the LOVE Train,’  now being published. I find myself drifting into the past at times while reflecting on these questions people have asked me over the years.

If you are allowed to peek through a magic window into the suffering reality of children in another country far away from your personal comfort zone, and if the timing is right, like me you might hear a faint voice deep inside of your being that says you can do something to help. And with a bit more time to witness a heretofore-unknown reality out of that window, you might take the first step forward to become a change-maker for these children – because down deep you know you can. The how, why and when will come when the time and conditions are right. Your heart is speaking to you, not your head. You are unaware that you will be required to make life-changing decisions in the service of others, and they might be difficult. Many people asked me why would I do this, and how could I take on such a big responsibility? My heart told me I could. The how and where I would learn step by step. Little by little my innocence was replaced with understanding and wisdom and I my naïve began to fade.

Sometimes you just have to take that leap

And grow your wings on the way down.

                                                        --Karen Frank

I never looked at these questions the way others did.  My vision captured the immediate situation and I chose to act to create Chicuchas Wasi in 1987. Had I mapped out a 10 year or even 5 year plan - many warned was indispensable to properly launch a nonprofit - and create a funded budget ready and standing by to begin such a big undertaking, it would surely have scared me off. The reality of what it takes to start up a nonprofit would absolutely have had me running as far away as possible. This is one of those times that ignorance is bliss. Looking back I recognize that if I had known all that CW would require I would never have taken the first step in fear of failure. I think this is what holds most people back from stepping up to the plate to make a difference when they know too much.  So one step at a time did work for me and for CW.  Not alone for long, I watched as many people were attracted to step up to help CW succeed. In thirty-one years we have achieved enormous success to change the lives of hundreds of children in Cusco, Peru who are now able to grasp the opportunities available for them to create a better life.

                         WE DID IT!

We created a special CW school together.

                   THANK YOU

Ruth & Gloria and Staff cheer on the graduates

In this season of LOVE…Please shine some LOVE on our teachers.

This is CW December graduation celebration with awards and diplomas being handed out by Administrator Ruth and Assist. Admin.Gloria to all girls who earned them as their teachers cheer them on. School ends after this event and the Christmas party is also on the same day each year.
                                     ********
The 2019 school year will begin in 15 days and everyone is in getting ready with last minute rushing around to prepare for opening day. Uniforms are being washed, shoes cleaned up and maybe polished and there are many excited shared conversations between students at home.

I do need to report on our financial situation today since my 11/2018 report that an annual $65,000 donation has ended. I have been reaching out and you have responded to help us fill the financial loss for this year. I report that since Christmas and the year-end campaign gratefully we have raised a total of $50,300. available toward the 2019 annual projected budget of 153,000.

We can put on hold some of our programs but we cannot stop paying our teachers - the spine and strength of any school and especially the Chicuchas Wasi School with our specially prepared and dedicated Teachers. Truly we cannot lose even one of our teachers, who were specifically chosen because they offered more than the important academics to teach primary students. They also embraced the CW values and mission to be a CW teacher. Our teachers are the most obvious role models for our students and must themselves live up to the values CW teaches the girls. We have Cusco's BEST teachers at our CW school.

I am now seeing that this 2019 teacher budget of $73,000 could be short and if you are able to help financially it would be appreciated. Every donation big or small matters and makes a big difference when you add them up.

Our teachers not only teach their class, they make home visits to each family to understand the girl’s home reality. In addition our teachers have another responsibility: they wait in the early morning at the bus stop with the girls for the CW school bus. At each bus pick up location there is a teacher who accompanies the girls to and from school to protect vulnerable little girls. Some even tutor several students in their homes so they can be with their own children after school.

Dear Friends, we wish you a Happy New Year for 2019

THANKS to YOU we had a successful 2018. YOU gave the gift of an education to 123 underserved girls - they KNOW you care about them and THANK YOU with all their hearts.

The month of December every year is best described as hectic. Joyous celebrations of Christmas, and the happy but also sad graduating girls move on to join their older big sisters in high school. The Peru school year ends each December and students begin their summer vacations at home until March 2019.

In spite of the aching hearts the girls feel as they move on after 8 years in the protective arms of the their CW home base, our girls are well prepared and have now joined the older girls who came before them now in high school. Now as new members of the CW Bernadette Alumnae Sisterhood they will receive the emotional support and mentoring that the high school girls (now about 57 alumnae girls) requested from CW in 2017.  Going forward all CW grads remain part of the Chicuchas Wasi Family as they continue to grow and develop their futures.

The CW Christmas party is behind us, and all our girls are still floating on the joy of their traditional hot chocolate and
panettone sweet bread and like all children this time of year - their Christmas gift. Our students have ended the school year on a happy note and have now gone home to the often difficult reality each girl experiences while at home and is not always easy. Our commitment continues however and all the girls know how to reach the school director Ruth and the CW psychologist Alejandro for emergencies.

Ruth stands between CW's two high achievers and their proud mothers as they receive their diplomas with noted achievements. Also, summer vacation is the time that we do necessary school maintenance and enlist the parents and teachers for special projects.

                                  *********************

CW made it through another year, THANK YOU! Together we have improved the lives, health and futures of 123 CW students and the 50 Plus CW Alumnae girls who still cling to CW for emotional and mentoring support. The CW success is due to YOU and your donations - you see and value the CW dedication to free quality education for poor rural Girls - you matter!  THANK YOU!

****Travel with Rae and Efrain in 2019 to MachuPicchu and Cusco, Peru.  ****

We stay connected to our girls and to our supporters of the CW family and welcome your visit to the school. To keep up with the operating costs and raise funds, Rae will be leading a tour in the fall of 2019 with Efrain Valles (Peru's award winning Tour Guide) and invite you to join us.
