CW early shelter children-Efrain back row in red
CW early shelter children-Efrain back row in red
I believe what I am about to tell you will matter to you, as it does me.

Do you remember how Chicuchas Wasi began 27 years ago?

In 1987 our Chicuchas Wasi(CW) shelter filled up quickly every day with the children who were living on the streets of Cusco, Peru, surviving by their wits and bad habits. They were mostly boys, the girls were less visible out there. We added more beds and even put mattresses on the floor of our vocational school to provide a safe sleep for some 40 children, if that. We provided a nurturing home environment with the daily basics (food, clothing, hygiene, etc.) including love and rules (school, showers, washing clothes) for healthy bodies and minds, as was possible considering the nature of the independent street child. We provided love most of all.

                                            Why did it change?

Ten years later in 1997 we understood what was needed to stem the abandonment of children - education for girls so they could survive financially as mothers. The CW school for girls was created.

From the shelter years we have some amazing stories of success from those first children and today’s school is the result of what we learned from them about financially dependent and abandoned mothers.

Don’t stop!    - I promise you, this story will make you smile

A skinny 9 year old boy with a pleasant attitude, named Efrain......was one of the children in our vocational school in 1990 who needed a safe place to sleep. Abandoned by his family to survive alone, sleeping under market tables or in doorways at this tender age is a frightening experience. Efrain immediately knew he was safe and loved by the protective arms of CW and he had no intention of leaving. He studied, he followed the rules and has been a part of the CW family ever since.

Efrain is an adult today, a responsible family man and father of three and professional tour guide in Cusco. Since the CW school was created 17 years ago, he has been very active in making CW school for girls a success. Efrain has run marathons, races, arranged Christmas parties for CW students provided by local Cusco tour companies and more.

Educating girls really matters to Efrain, he has lived the reality of mothers denied

Remember his history; Efrain entered the CW emergency shelter as a 9 year old abandoned child surviving alone on the streets of Cusco and he remained a resident until he graduated from college. Today, he is a CW board member in Cusco and the best ever ambassador for our school girls. He knows better than anyone the value of giving poor girls an education and a chance for a quality life and the ability to provide for their children so they will never be so desperate as to abandon them, like he was.

But that’s not all - we have an outstanding news flash for Efrain

Months ago Efrain was nominated by his co-workers (local tour guides), his clients, his friends and the tourist industry in Cusco for the World’s Best Tour Guide competition, sponsored by the Royal Geographic Society & Wanderlust in London. Soon he was listed as one of the top four for this award. Yesterday, Efrain arrived in London to to attend the award dinner to receive one of the top 4 awards this year. HE WON THE GOLD!! ..the highest award possible. The gift amount was 5000 pounds to be donated to the charity of his choice, he chose Chicuchas Wasi.

Educating girls really matters to Efrain for all girls

What a personal success story for this amazing young man. From his difficult youth living on the streets, to winning the GOLD award so that he can support girls education and stem the future child abandonment problem of the Cusco area.

Join me in cheering the incredible success of this young man who has woven CW school for girls into his everyday and shares his story freely with all of this tourists. You might have been one. So last night was an enormous achievement for Efrain personally and professionally. CW helped him get a good life today. This is the impact of CW.

All of the CW family is bursting with pride and the entire school of 105 girls is cheering loudly for their hero - he can probably hear them in London.

I thought you might like to know Efrain’s amazing success story and why one boy who understands well the dark side of life choses to make a difference for our school girls today.

YOU have made this possible, all of it, with your faith in us, your donations and belief that this small nonprofit can have an impact on the community it serves.    How is this for impact?

I hope YOU ARE smiling now.

THANK YOU and please think of us as the holidays approach

So many children are still benefiting from your generosity these 27 years

Happy Anniversary Chicuchas Wasi
                                    - for 27 years helping children in need in Cusco, Peru
  • Photo of Most cooperative, supportive and positive students per grade -These girls were each chosen by their classmates to represent the most positive, cooperative and supportive student of their classroom this year. They are recognized with banners that say Primavera and has to do with honoring a student for the day of the student 9/20/14 and part of the celebration.
  • Photo of Ruth honors the Chicuchas Wasi Staff (below) - Ruth honors each member of the CW school team without whom we would not be realizing our incredible success: 8 teachers, 2 cooks, 1 bus driver and 1 assistant Director to work with Ruth. She thanks them for their passion and dedication to the 105 special girls we serve.

Chicuchas Wasi school for poor indigenous girls in Cusco exists because YOU cared enough to make educating 105 girls your concern and priority. You stood by us in 1987 when we opened an emergency shelter for the 7,8 to 12 year olds sleeping huddled in piles on cold cement streets and in doorways, stealing food, and worse. We learned so much from the stories these amazing children told us and decided we could do something to stem child abandonment. In 1997 YOU were there standing beside Ruth and I when we went against the local custom and belief and began to offer free education to the very girls that would too soon be mothers and the most likely to abandon their babies if left uneducated.

Today, September 19, 2014 celebrates 27 years since Ronald, the first child to receive emergency shelter and nursing care after a knife wound to his arm while being robbed by another child. From that start in1987, today CW is educating girls to be able to survive economically and be financially independent mothers one day and strong leaders for a future with equality for indigenous girls and women in Cusco.

There was so much more along the way, but you know this story. Many of you were there with us and gave us the courage and strength to dare to challenge the Andean belief that girls don't matter.

YOU are the loyal supporters and donors of our 27 year history fighting for the basic rights of indigenous children and providing the love, education and support they must have for a life out of poverty and oppression.

                                          Education of GIRLS is urgent!

                                                 YOU are our heros.
YOU help us empower 105 girls!

                                                     THANK YOU!!

Good Nutrition builds strong, healthy bodies and minds - malnutrition damages for a lifetime

                                     YEA!! Their smiles are back!

YOU make the difference for our girls!
                                                    Thank you

Each March begins a new school year in Cusco and when CW students receive their annual medical and dental exams. During their 3 months vacation at home, student nutrition suffered severely, our poor parents cannot afford quality food for their families. The results were shocking. One third of our girls were severely anemic and the rest were borderline anemic. We were advised by the medical team to add animal protein and vitamins to our hot meal program immediately and we did. Today our girls are healthy again.

Ruth created a new plan to supply our kitchen with the ingredients needed for the new diet to keep our growing girls healthy and learning. The school garden grew, adding 24 chickens, guinea pigs and 2 sheep to supply our kitchen for the high protein meal served daily to 105 students. Gardening for nutrition is part of the school curriculum now and the girls get their hands in the garden and feed the animals. The grounds keeper actually keeps the garden and animals but the girls are learning they can grow quality food for better health.

Malnutrition in childhood causes irreversible damage.

Then six weeks ago it became obvious that more than the usual few arriving hungry each morning had grown to half of the student body. Ruth increased the oatmeal and bread breakfast for the students needing to eat and classes continued without a fuss. Our students are doing well again. Poverty is tough on all but worse on the innocent and helpless ones.

Chicuchas Wasi school for girls is an evolving project and we keep our eyes open to address issues before they become a serious problem.

This is the success of CW

We have immense appreciation of you - THANK YOU

Most of our girls have few of the basics in their 1 room homes; a doll for a 4 or 5 year old little girl is not a priority when food and a roof are a struggle to provide.

Our fantastic Kindergarten teachers understand their students all too well and created a special art project where each girl would create her very own unique doll herself and when finished it was hers to take home. These are the steps they took with growing confidence and a cheering section of teachers to lead the way.

                                                   Thank you
