CW early shelter children-Efrain back row in redI believe what I am about to tell you will matter to you, as it does me.
Do you remember how Chicuchas Wasi began 27 years ago?
In 1987 our Chicuchas Wasi(CW) shelter filled up quickly every day with the children who were living on the streets of Cusco, Peru, surviving by their wits and bad habits. They were mostly boys, the girls were less visible out there. We added more beds and even put mattresses on the floor of our vocational school to provide a safe sleep for some 40 children, if that. We provided a nurturing home environment with the daily basics (food, clothing, hygiene, etc.) including love and rules (school, showers, washing clothes) for healthy bodies and minds, as was possible considering the nature of the independent street child. We provided love most of all.
Why did it change?
Ten years later in 1997 we understood what was needed to stem the abandonment of children - education for girls so they could survive financially as mothers. The CW school for girls was created.
From the shelter years we have some amazing stories of success from those first children and today’s school is the result of what we learned from them about financially dependent and abandoned mothers.
Don’t stop! - I promise you, this story will make you smile
A skinny 9 year old boy with a pleasant attitude, named Efrain......was one of the children in our vocational school in 1990 who needed a safe place to sleep. Abandoned by his family to survive alone, sleeping under market tables or in doorways at this tender age is a frightening experience. Efrain immediately knew he was safe and loved by the protective arms of CW and he had no intention of leaving. He studied, he followed the rules and has been a part of the CW family ever since.
Efrain is an adult today, a responsible family man and father of three and professional tour guide in Cusco. Since the CW school was created 17 years ago, he has been very active in making CW school for girls a success. Efrain has run marathons, races, arranged Christmas parties for CW students provided by local Cusco tour companies and more.
Educating girls really matters to Efrain, he has lived the reality of mothers denied
Remember his history; Efrain entered the CW emergency shelter as a 9 year old abandoned child surviving alone on the streets of Cusco and he remained a resident until he graduated from college. Today, he is a CW board member in Cusco and the best ever ambassador for our school girls. He knows better than anyone the value of giving poor girls an education and a chance for a quality life and the ability to provide for their children so they will never be so desperate as to abandon them, like he was.
But that’s not all - we have an outstanding news flash for Efrain
Months ago Efrain was nominated by his co-workers (local tour guides), his clients, his friends and the tourist industry in Cusco for the World’s Best Tour Guide competition, sponsored by the Royal Geographic Society & Wanderlust in London. Soon he was listed as one of the top four for this award. Yesterday, Efrain arrived in London to to attend the award dinner to receive one of the top 4 awards this year. HE WON THE GOLD!! ..the highest award possible. The gift amount was 5000 pounds to be donated to the charity of his choice, he chose Chicuchas Wasi.
Educating girls really matters to Efrain for all girls
What a personal success story for this amazing young man. From his difficult youth living on the streets, to winning the GOLD award so that he can support girls education and stem the future child abandonment problem of the Cusco area.
Join me in cheering the incredible success of this young man who has woven CW school for girls into his everyday and shares his story freely with all of this tourists. You might have been one. So last night was an enormous achievement for Efrain personally and professionally. CW helped him get a good life today. This is the impact of CW.
All of the CW family is bursting with pride and the entire school of 105 girls is cheering loudly for their hero - he can probably hear them in London.
I thought you might like to know Efrain’s amazing success story and why one boy who understands well the dark side of life choses to make a difference for our school girls today.
