Proud & Happy Graduates of CW ( Alumni Sisterhood)
Proud & Happy Graduates of CW ( Alumni Sisterhood)

The New Year is here and we wish you the very best for 2016

The Chicuchas Wasi school for girls graduated another outstanding class of 6th graders in December. Ruth came up with a great idea to keep in touch with prior students; she created the 'CW Alumni Sisterhood Group' to keep our girls in contact with CW once out of the nest and also to share their experiences with the new grads. Our excited, but anxious new grads were relieved to talk with the now experienced CW alumni to help prepare them for the reality of public school. The first Sisterhood meeting of the 2013, 2014 and now 2015 alumni girls met over lunch in Ruth's home; the laughter of 20 girls filled the room, they shared their stories and problems to help calm the anxiety of leaving the loving arms of Chicuchas Wasi. The girls are ready; they will take their 8 years of CW preparation with them to their new public high school. CW had a successful 2015 school year and 2016 promises to be even better.

We have YOU to thank for all you have given these girls the last 8 years. CW education and empowerment has changed them forever and they will have many opportunities going forward. We are so proud of their achievements AND of YOU who have supported our mission. THANK YOU for hanging in there with us. Just look at the faces of our alumni girls.....Proud and Happy!

                                            ******************

Chicuchas Wasi education for rural girls is making a BIG DIFFERENCE FOR OUR STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. The school impact is felt throughout the community and with our alumni girls who are recognized for their achievements at their new high school.

                                               THANK YOU!

Only 3 days left to DONATE to get your TAX BENEFIT

The graduating 6th grade students brought in an emotional closing ceremony for Chicuchas Wasi School year 2015, with the school Mayor holding the Peruvian flag for the last time. A bittersweet moment for all those saying goodbye to their beloved school. The Mayor's ceremony to install the new 2016 CW school Mayor by shifting the banner over onto the incoming Mayor in the center of 5th grade photo below.

Only 3 days until we in the USA have to focus on year-end tax time. To donate or not to donate, YES DONATE to educate girls and lower your tax impact. Below is a story Ruth just shared with me showing the CW IMPACT in a most unexpected way. YES we ARE making a BIG DIFFERENCE FOR OUR STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. GRACIAS!

CW school ended a month early due to the El Nino phenomena that is dumping heavy rain in places where it never rains - like Lima. Fortunately, so far nothing too serious in Lima or in Cusco at the school.

Chicuchas Wasi school for girls is truly blessed. The school impact is felt throughout the community and with our alumni girls who are recognized for their achievements at their new high school.  THANKS TO YOUR support!

                                                *****************

At the start of our 2015 school closing ceremony, there was an unusual event that took place that Ruth shared with me. If you ever wonder if CW is making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate, this story will move you.

The final day of school arrived and closing ceremony program was ready to begin when a 5 year old kindergarten student approached one of the teachers to ask if she could please tell her poem. Director Ruth Uribe smiled and nodded yes. Our little student recited her poem that she created in memory since she does not read or write yet. She told of her love for her school and her Professor Ruth and that she was very sad she had to leave. She said no other school would love her like CW or hug her like everyone does at CW or listen to her like they do at her precious school. She was choked up but managed to finish her poem. Director Ruth was deeply moved and when the father came up to her and told her he found a job in the jungle and they had to move. He wanted to thank her for all the help CW has given to his family and they are more united now because of CW parent groups and they know they will not find another school like CW, but their daughter WILL go to school. They understand now that her education is important. Muchas gracias he told Ruth with tears running down his face. Ruth was crying and I am sure the audience was too.

Ruth organized the first meeting of the CW alumni sisterhood in her home. No meeting with teenagers is complete without food and laughter and both were present. The CW alumni students told high school stories and gave advice to the new CW grads about the transition from their beloved CW school to a co-ed public high school. This gathering of our alumni students is a new CW program to build alumni sisterhood and allow Ruth to get follow up reports on the girls going forward. Below the girls gather for a group photo after a fun afternoon for all. A BIG SUCCESS!

This is what a visitor had to say:

"I spent a couple of hours at Chicuchas Wasi whilst visiting my daughter in Peru. I used to work for UNICEF UK, so have visited a number of schools in developing countries. I thought this school was a little jewel - the buildings are well designed and maintained, the girls obviously feel both nurtured and celebrated, and the staff are clearly united in their caring attitude and positive philosophy. I was very impressed."  - anonymous professional with expertise in this field.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas from all of us at Chicuchas Wasi              ** THANK YOU so much for educating our girls.**

The Chicuchas Wasi 2015 Annual Report is linked below for you.

On a more serious note we still need a bigger/stronger and indispensable school vehicle to transport our girls safely to and from school. Without it there will be no school. The van we have now is failing with the heavy use. It was less expensive to purchase, but we need a larger hardier small bus to manage 110 girls every day.

As we each recall our year and count our blessings in 2015, please consider donating this season to help us obtain a small bus for the girls at CW.

I don't normally make a special request, but the condition of our only school transportation Van has prompted me to do so this time. Students must walk through often wet fields to get to the school, when our van breaks down and that is now too often.

We have raised $9,591 this year towards the cost of $65,000 for the small Mercedes bus, the only make able to handle the rugged Cusco roads. If you are able to donate to this special need we would be ever grateful.
Please see our school bus GlobalGiving page:   https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/send-disadvantaged-rural-girls-to-school-in-peru/

**This has become urgent for our next school that start in March 2016.**

**Please help us get these girls to school & donate for the new bus.**

CW is blessed to have global supporters from many countries that cheer the girl's progress and keep in touch on Facebook, emails and writing their reviews (like below) on www.greatnonprofits.org. YOUR donations provide the quality of education and personal guidance that our girls receive.
YOU have improved their lives forever.

This is what a visitor had to say:

"I visited Chicuchas Wasi in 2011 and thanks to their posts on Facebook and their regular newsletters I am able to follow their activities from a distance. I love to see both the smiling faces of the girls as they enjoy their life at school and the concentration on their faces as they are studying. I admire the dedication of the Director, Ruth, and all the staff who enable the students to benefit from an excellent education, a nutritional meal programme and even health care in a lovely purpose built facilities. The excellent attendance rates indicate just how much the girls and their parents value the education and all the other benefits that the school provides. It is so important to enable girls to stand on their own two feet in life. Their time at the school will ensure the girls are able make well informed decisions about their future, to provide for themselves and their families and make a good contribution to their community and society at large." –Sally

CW Girls wish you a Happy Thanksgiving

November is my special month to more profoundly reflect on my blessings and top of the list is that I am in deep gratitude to be a part of Chicuchas Wasi (CW) the last 28 years. When I feel and express gratitude for the blessings I have received, I notice that my heart opens and my ability to love more grows

"It's not happiness that brings us gratitude.
It is gratitude that brings us happiness." -unknown.

CW has so much to be thankful for. Just look into the laughing faces of our 110 girls as they enthusiastically reach out for their dreams, erasing the memory of the early days when the light did not shine in those eyes.

We are about to end the 2015 school year 1 month early due to El Nino, with this year's graduating class. CW is truly blessed. Because of YOU the school is successful and our girls are often winning awards for their achievements. THANK YOU!

                                "If your plan is for 1 year, plant rice;
                              If your plan is for 10 years, plant trees;
If your plan his for 100 years, educate children." - Confucius

           *****************************************************************************

In order for CW girls to personally grow and expand their minds during the 8 school years with us and beyond, requires the support of their families. Convincing parents how education will open doors to a brighter future for their daughters and reap benefits for the entire family was a huge challenge 18 years ago when the school opened. Today, we have enthusiastic and hard working parents who participate in classroom activities, make the road passable to the school after heavy rains, and help raise money and awareness for CW school during Cusco's traditional celebrations and special school days. Ruth is so happy to see the growing parental participation; now 50% of parents -mostly mothers but increasingly more fathers show up at parent meetings, and many do their part to make CW school the best school.

A school is nothing more than a cold building without good teachers and we have the best, the most dedicated and passionate teachers on our CW team. There is nothing they will not do to make this the best education and loving safe space for our girls. During summer vacation one year, Ruth and the teachers decided to paint and brighten up their classrooms and in the process enjoyed themselves while joking with their co-workers.

Our part time husband & wife teachers, Ivan for English and Carmen for Art, have grown to love of CW and our girls and often join in the special events at the school.

The CW cooks go out of their way to come up with tasty economical recipes to boost student health, many fluctuate between moderate to severe anemia, to make sure their meals are high protein and nutritious. They understand that there is little at home to provide this.

Our school van driver is not only the happiest driver I have ever seen, when not driving girls to and from their pick up location, he is handy around the school making needed repairs for Ruth and is a bright light as an integral part of the school team.

CW is blessed to have global supporters from many countries that cheer the girl's progress and keep in touch on Facebook, emails and writing their reviews on www.greatnonprofits.org YOUR donations provide the quality of education and personal guidance that our girls receive.

THANK YOU for improving the lives of so many girls.
*Please watch for our Annual Report next week*

Already preparing for the next school year in March 2016, our students have been busy nominating, debating and electing the new school mayor - the liaison between students and teachers. CW leadership training begins in kindergarten and is in full swing at election time, all eyes are watching to learn how the debate and voting works. This they will share with their parents.

This is what a visitor had to say:

"On August 20th, 2015 my husband and I had the opportunity to visit Chicuchas Wasi. I was so impressed with Ruth’s dedication, endless energy and love towards not only all the students, but also her staff, the parents of the students and the community. The Chicuchas Wasi teachers and staff are awesome and very dedicated to the young ladies they are educating, by not only giving them the academic tools but also giving them the tools to build their self-pride, self-reliance and self-confidence for a successful future. The Chicuchas Wasi program educates young ladies from pre-school until 6th grade. We were invited to visit every classroom and were welcomed with songs, poetry, safety lesson, art lesson, English class and a science project. The Chicuchas Wasi young ladies overcome extreme hardships to get an education, yet they all were very welcoming. Their songs and poetry expressed how grateful they are for their education (which is free), how much they love their teachers and especially their director Ruth. I left each classroom with tears in my eyes and a heart full of love from all the hugs I received. Visiting Chicuchas Wasi was the highlight of our visit to Cusco and I am so glad to be a little part of the Chicuchas Wasi family." - Isabel

All ready to perform for CW 28th Anniversary
All ready to perform for CW 28th Anniversary

Chicuchas Wasi is celebrating 28 years of success serving the children of Cusco.

FIESTA! The entire school is ready for our big celebration!

Time flies when you love what you do! Chicuchas Wasi school students, teachers and staff are all passionate and proud about the incredible impact we have been able to make in the community we serve.

The CW success for over 28 years, last 18 years as a school for the 110 girls and families we serve, is visible through their achievements. Our girls who have gone on to high school have been noticed and many have been awarded the highest achievers at the new high school. The same schools who believed our girls did not have the smarts for high school. Just watch them soar - now that they are given the opportunity.

The Anniversary Celebration was created by our fabulous teachers. Each teacher prepared a presentation with her grade class, the dances, poems, songs and skits they presented were outstanding.

                                                     **********

CW founder, Rae Lewis was visiting and so other celebrations were included. Rae's birthday was celebrated with a beautiful three tiered cake created by Aydee, our 4th grade teacher. Sorry no room for photo.

                                                     **********

Meditation is being taught in many US schools today to help students reduce their stress level more effectively and manage their emotions - in only 5 minutes. Our girls have plenty of both and Rae took the opportunity to teach all students, staff, family and friends to meditate while visiting the school. The entire group found it helpful and calming in stressful moments. The teachers plan to add meditation to their class time each week.
