The Komera Project is a leadership incubator in rural Rwanda that invests in girls who have the courage and desire to pursue secondary education, but lack the resources to do so. The project provides girls with access to secondary education, mentoring, and leadership training. The project aims to improve the girls' academic performance and to raise school completion rates in order to support a more equitable future for women Rwanda.
Though 97.5% of Rwandan girls attend primary school, only 2.8% percent graduate from secondary school. The majority of Rwandan households that live below the poverty line are headed by women and girls. Each additional year of secondary school boosts a girls' future earnings by as much as 15 to 25 percent. Our project enables girls to have access to education and works to break the cycle of poverty that prevents girls from attending school.
Girls needs more than just school fees in order to succeed. In addition to school tuition, we provide health insurance, uniforms, school supplies, feminine hygiene products, and transportation so that girls can achieve their academic goals. Girls participate in the Komera Project only after 100% of the funds needed for the entire duration of upper secondary school are secured. Girls also participate in a mentorship program, social entrepreneurship training, and leadership training.
Girls with a secondary school education earn more money, marry later, and have fewer children than those who do not. When women earn income, they typically invest 90% of it into their families, as compared to 30%-40% for men. More income for women translates into improved child nutrition, health, and education, which in turn has a powerful impact on families and communities. Educating girls breaks the cycle of poverty and disease.
