This project will support 300 farmers in the different sub-counties of Buikwe District on the use of agriculture as a profit making business and a healthy way of living. The organization will provide them with good quality seed, training on best farming practices, how to boost their production, quality of their produce and improve on their nutrition. Once the crops are ready for harvest the organization will buy them from the farmers and take to the market.
The Ugandan Economy is dominated by agriculture which accounts 80 % of employment and 22 % of the gross domestic product. 85 % of the population in rural areas depend of agriculture as the main source of livelihood. 90% of all rural women work in agriculture, however they contribute from a disadvantaged position. These women farmers lack the information on market trends, price, climate change, credit facilities and also their locations do not favor them.
This project will work closely with 300 farmers, organize them in farmer groups and help them improve their production by making sure that they grow a variety of crops like tomatoes, matooke, beetroot, cabbages, egg plants and indigenous greens like Amaranthus dubius (Dodo) . We shall also teach them back yard and commercial farming on one acre of land. The produce will be brought from the farmers and sold to the markets. The profits will be invested in a Savings and Credit Cooperative.
By practicing good farming practices the farmers will be able to boost their production, improve quality of their produce, enhance on their household incomes and this will impact on their families. In the long run their standard of living will improve. The profits made from the one acre piece of land will be used to set up a Saving and Credit Cooperative, acquire another piece of land and help another village set up a once acre farm solely for commercial purposes.
