April Update Report - "Virgin" Las Margaritas

Child in Chiapas
Child in Chiapas

Chiapas is one of the poorest states in Mexico, with the highest rates of illiteracy in the country and 76.7% of its population in moderate and extreme poverty, putting youth at great risk of drug abuse and criminal activity. Tobacco and alcohol abuse in adolescence often serves as a gateway to more dangerous drug use and paves the way to serious and debilitating addictions. In the marginalized community of Las Margaritas, Chiapas, our program will counteract these risks by providing children with life skills for healthy development.

Our school based, life skills program takes an early prevention approach, focused on school performance as a protective factor for drug abuse. As a result of a recent “I want to, I can … be successful in school” project implemented in three states in Mexico, students increased their motivation to do well and stay in school. The program has also shown to be very effective in the prevention of addictions.

We are very excited about this project that will reduce drug abuse and improve the lives of hundreds of children in Las Margaritas. Your support will supply teachers with training and materials to improve school performance and prevent drug use in students. We encourage you to consider making a monthly donation so the children in Mexico can have the happy and healthy life every child should have!
