Challenge

The issue is severe drought that has considerably reduced crop yields thereby threatening starvation for over 4.7 million people out of a population of 18 million people in Malawi. Those most hit by this drought are smallholder farming households majority of which are subsistence farmers. This means the drought has affected people who are already living below poverty line. With crop failure, hunger is likely to take 13 months from March 2018 to February 2019. Ordinarily, Malawi encounters flood.

Solution

The Food Relief and Emergency Aid, Drought Management Project is potentially significant in that it promise long term impacts on affected households in the selected districts. Initially, the project will provide relief assistance in terms of food rations and immediately resort to long term strategies to empower households to produce vegetables as well as plant drought resistant crops. This means come the next agriculture season, the households will not depend on rains to come in order to plant.
