This project officially started in August 2006; it’s an on-going 3-year project with several phases and an anticipated overall end date of July 2009. This phase which is funded through global giving is slightly behind schedule to do delays at the start of the project, but nearing completion at this time. Since the start of this project, four local field workers have been working with these communities to create accessible safe water supplies for community members to live healthier more productive lives. The overall goal of the project is to provide 100% of the community with safe drinking water and sanitation facilities. In order to meet these goals during this first phase, five Water and Sanitation committee’s (totaling 64 individual community members) were formed. One committee for each of the 5 villages this project involves. Committee’s were formed to take steps to improve the present sanitation conditions of the villages. Through the assistance of our in country partner organization, the committee’s strategized and found ways to solve the sanitation problems. A baseline survey of each community sanitation needs was conducted. This will be helpful for the communities and partner organization in planning efforts to help the communities achieve 100% sanitation. Additionally during this phase, health and education sessions were conducted to promote proper hygiene behavior practices. Through these activities, the hygiene and sanitation knowledge of the community members is increasing, and as a result sever constructed their own hygienic latrines.
