Soul Work Continues

By Domonique Brace | PALS Coordinator

The adage birthwork is soul work still resonates with how we show up for parenting and pregnant teens in our community. We have seen the importance of this work as we grow to advance maternal and reproductive justice, paid family leave, and affordable childcare all uplifted during Black Maternal Health Week 2024 held April 11-17th. We know the work is ongoing, but it has felt uplifting to see that changes are on the horizon. BMHW is an annual event that cultivates awareness, activism, and community-building to amplify the voices, perspectives and lived experiences of Black Mamas and birthing people.

In March we had our first birth of the year, which was uplifting and joyful. The client shared it was a great birth experience with their TFF doula, and we were also able to connect them with some amazing resources at a local Community Baby Shower. This client had resources like massage, childcare, pelvic floor therapy, and perinatal mental health professionals available to them. They also received a car seat, stroller, and other infant care products to help them on their new journey into parenthood.

We know that having access to doulas and other safe quality care is HUGE in creating change in Black Maternal Health. This month the first cohort completed training to introduce 12 additional Black Doulas to Ingham County and mentorship that will help create a solid foundation for them to add their fire to our soul work. The second leg of the cohort will complete training in November 2024. We are truly making changes on a local level and TFF has helped us put roots down in assisting adolescents and families fighting for justice after healing.

Thank you for your compassion that leads us to enhance reproductive justice in our community.

Best Regards,

Domonique Brace
