Pearl Entrepreneurs Academy (PEA) is a charitable Community Based Organization based in Mayuge Uganda founded by the young people to give back to the community. At night, for lighting, they have no choice but to use kerosene lanterns and open flame candles. The smoke from these lights sources is hazardous to their health. The flames are also a fire hazard. PEA is helping to address these issues by providing safe, renewable, solar-powered lights to kids and students read, study and do school work
Kerosene lanterns used by kids and students are a health hazard and cause tragic fires. The weak and flickering lights damage the kid's eyesight when they are studying at night which also causes headaches. Additionally, the smoke and soot from the open flames adversely affects their lung health. The on-going kerosene costs for these lanterns deplete scare family resources. These hazardous lanterns have caused fire that have consumed homes and resulted in many deaths.
This project will provide safe, renewable energy lighting through solar- rechargeable lights. The kids and students will now be able to read, do school home work, revise books and study safely at night with no risk to their health and lives. No school children should have to risk their lives because of having to study with dangerous kerosene light. Solar lights will make safe studying a reality.
The project is an effective intervention that will provide a renewable energy light source to kids and students as they study. It will save families hundreds of dollars in fuel expense over 3-5 years. Also we will be eliminating the potential for house fires. The children will be able study and read in a safe environment. This will help them excel in their school work, final exams and further their education.
