The end of 2010 was another exciting quarter for Alive & Kicking. In the final 3 months of the year our stitching centres in Lusaka and Nairobi produced 15,240 balls for distribution in Africa. All of our balls continue to be stitched by adults from disadvantaged communities, whom we pay a fair wage.
At the end of November Alive & Kicking Kenya launched the first ever African-made rugby balls (read more about this story on our website). These balls, which are of training match standard, have been commended for their grip by professional rugby players from Kenya and the UK. If you want to get your hands on one, visit our Shop page (where all products are sold not-for-profit).
In Zambia, our policy of employing disabled and deaf stitchers was praised by an official from the Ministry of Labour, who confirmed that we are one of the only organisations in the country to employ deaf people. By offering a job, and a living wage salary, to individuals who would otherwise struggle to find employment it is easy to see how we make a tangible difference to the areas in which we operate.
The final big piece of news from the period is the adoption of a new Employment Charter in both of our centres. This charter, which formally enshrines many of the principles that we have long adhered to, includes issues such as non-discrimination, a fair rate of pay, and no child or forced labour. You can read the full charter on our website.
