It’s been an exciting summer at Alive and Kicking. Our stitching centres in Kenya, Zambia, and Ghana continue to produce over 5,000 footballs a month; creating sustainable employment for over 130 people while providing disadvantaged children with quality sports balls. We’ve also engaged in some great partnerships that will help us promote health awareness and children’s right to play.
A&K Zambia completes 2014 Roadshow
A&K Zambia’s annual roadshow was held in the Lusaka Province this year. Together, local coaches from across the four locations (Kafue, Chongwe, Munali and Chipata Compound) led educational football drills on HIV prevention with coaches from Tackle Africa. The roadshow attracted large crowds, allowing Alive & Kicking the opportunity to invite the local community to learn about HIV and take part in voluntary counselling and testing. 1,000 hand-stitched Alive & Kicking balls were donated and given to participants and other local schools and projects.
A&K Kenya Partnership with Southwest Airlines on Project LuvSeat
A&K Kenya has launched an exciting initiative with Southwest Airlines and SOS Children’s Village to help ‘Upcycle’ over 40 acres of leather removed from Southwest aeroplane seat covers (approximately 80,000 leather seats). As a part of Southwest’s multi-phase sustainable program, Project LuvSeat, A&K Kenya will use the leather to make high-quality footballs and train young adults from SOS’s projects as ball-stitchers. By the end of the year, 1,000 upcycled footballs will be stitched and donated.
Alive and Kicking Selected for the 2014 ICAP Charity Day
Alive & Kicking is delighted to have been selected to benefit from the 2014 ICAP Charity Day this December. Every year, ICAP takes a day to donate 100% of its worldwide revenue to a number of charities. 15 charities were selected from the UK, so Alive & Kicking is honoured to take part. Involvement in the ICAP Charity Day will allow Alive & Kicking to run substantial health awareness programmes in Kenya, Zambia and Ghana, training community sports coaches in health-educative football drills and donating a large number of balls to young people who otherwise would not be able to afford them.
Thank you to all of our supporters. Our continued success would not be possible without the ongoing support of people like you.
