By Simon Hilditch | Programme Manager
Alive & Kicking has enjoyed an excellent start to 2014, as our stitching centres in Kenya, Zambia and Ghana embark on exciting new initiatives. They continue to make over 5,000 balls a month, for sale and donation across several African countries, and provide sustainable fair-pay employment for over 130 people.
Ghana Health Outreach
A&K Ghana has completed its first major health outreach programme. 64 coaches from Greater Accra were trained in educative football drills which increase understanding of HIV and malaria; how the viruses work and how they can be prevented. Working with partners ORPED Sports, the coaches developed skills which they can use with their teams going forward. Tournaments were organised between the coaches’ teams and over 900 balls, printed with simple health messages, were donated. Full report to follow; check A&K updates on Facebook, Twitter and our website.
Kenya Visually Impaired project
Working closely with the Angus Lawson Memorial Trust, A&K Kenya has completed an innovative programme allowing visually impaired children to participate in sport. Using specially made ‘sound balls,’ which contain ball bearings and allow players to rely on hearing rather than sight, 400 children and their teachers were given an introduction to blind football and the ability to take it forward themselves. It provided an opportunity for visually impaired children to take part in organised sport, often for the first time.
New Stock for Online Shop
Alive & Kicking’s Online Shop has been updated to reflect some exciting new designs. Two new synthetic designs - ‘circles’ and ‘triangles’ - are now available, as well as our traditional leather, rugby and cow hide balls. Personalised balls can be provided for your company, which are great tools for marketing and promotions. The Online Shop is the best way for customers outside of Africa to get their hands on an Alive & Kicking ball. Visit aliveandkicking.org/shop to get yours today!
Thank you
A big thank you to all of our supporters, who have been a crucial part of our success to date and continue to play an important role as we look to increase our impact across Africa.
