The first half of 2014 has seen Alive & Kicking go from strength to strength. Our stitching centres in Kenya, Zambia and Ghana continue to make over 5,000 balls a month and embark on exciting initiatives to raise awareness around preventable disease and to combat social exclusion. Our balls are sold and donated across several African countries and provide sustainable fair-pay employment for over 130 people.
2013 Annual Review
Alive & Kicking’s Annual Review 2013 is now available to view online. 2013 was another significant and successful year in Alive & Kicking’s development and the Annual Review contains information on all our major achievements. Our not-for-profit stitching centres in Kenya, Zambia and Ghana continued to make impressive strides in retail while pushing forward with innovative and exciting social outreach and health awareness programmes.
A&K Ghana successfully completed its first health awareness initiative, teaching football coaches and young people in Accra about HIV and malaria. A&K Kenya launched the first ever training programme for the blind, using specially designed ‘sound balls’ and arranging training sessions and tournaments for over 500 visually impaired children. In Zambia, we built on the success of previous years to take our hugely successful HIV awareness roadshow to the Central Province. The year also saw thousands of balls donated across each country, including the matched donations from our award winning ‘Balls For Africa’ partnership with John Lewis.
The Alive & Kicking Annual Review 2013 has information on all these stories and more, including the impact our work has on our staff and communities, the progress we have made in terms of publicity and support, and information about how you can get involved and support our progress going forward.
HIV Awareness Roadshow – Lusaka Province
A&K Zambia has begun the 2014 HIV Awareness Roadshow, which is being hosted in four locations in Lusaka Province. Working with our partners Tackle Africa, the roadshow will visit locations in and around Zambia’s capital; Kafue, Chongwe, Munali and Chipata Compound. The roadshow will see coaches from each area trained in football drills that can be used to teach young people about HIV. The coaches will complete a training course amongst themselves before being evaluated as they deliver the training to their own teams. Each week of training will be followed by day of community football and netball tournaments, in which the local community will be invited to learn about HIV and take part in voluntary counselling and testing. 1,000 hand-stitched Alive & Kicking balls will be donated to participants and other local schools and projects.
Thank you
A big thank you to all of our individual supporters, who continue to be a crucial part of our success as we look to increase our impact across Africa.
