Mentoring Girls to become future Women Engineers

by Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs - DIY Girls

Summary

DIY Girls is partnering with Society of Women Engineers collegiate chapters to mentor and inspire underserved girls. Our program allows young girls to learn about STEM careers in a hands-on way from young women who are currently pursuing engineering degrees. Through mentorship, girls will complete creative engineering projects and will learn about what the experience of women studying engineering is like directly from college engineering students.

Challenge

Less than 15% of girls show an interest in STEAM at the critical ages between 4th-8th grade. Women currently represent less than 25% of the STEAM workforce. Latinas represent only 2% of employed scientists and engineers. Our programs served low-income girls in Los Angeles. All of the girls are underrepresented minorities.

Solution

DIY Girls is bringing together elementary school girls and female university students and providing them with curriculum, projects, materials, and in-person and online support so that these women engineers are able to become role models for young girls in their community. This program allows young girls to learn about STEM careers in a hands-on way from young women who are currently pursuing engineering degrees.

Long-Term Impact

DIY Girls aims to serve 500 girls that are underrepresented minorities in technical fields and attend schools in low-income areas. We partner with schools where 85% or above of the student population qualify for free and reduced lunch and where the math and science achievement is below 50%, as measured by a passing score on standardized tests. Our aim is to supplement their educational experiences with extracurricular activities that are engaging, hands-on, and student centered.
