Project Report-Identification of Disability.

Project Location-Dakshinpuri is a resettlement colony in South Delhi. Consisting of 31 separate blocks with above four hundred houses each, it houses close to a hundred thousand people in an area no more than 10 sq. kilometers. The Government helped in setting up the colony but the people living in this community are from low socioeconomic background sticking with poverty.

SAMADHAN's strategy is to link services for the intellectually disabled, with the needs of their mothers and of the women in the community. Our focus is Identification of  intellectual disability & provide therapeutic services in the low income community to the disabled mothers and their mentally handicapped offspring through house to house surveys, puppet shows, street play etc.

Activities

We have started the awareness activities for in our target community at Dakshinpuri which stands as low socioeconomic group. Community survey workers Mrs Babita and Mrs Sarojni are a great resource in identifying the intellectually disabled children and actively involved in creating awareness about intellectual disabilities. There were 412 house to house  surveys  conducted and 11 families were identified with disabilities in the months of May and June. Most people of Dakshinpuri with intellectual disability experience problem in communicating with others. It may be hampered by sensory impairment, there condition seems to be related with external circumstances such as lack of information, lack of exercise, poor mobility, poor eating habits were found to be the common characteristic of people with disability. House to house survey helped us to understand about the community and  the need of relevant services for  the community. Apart from house to house survey we would be focusing our surveys on  Govt and private Schools. Objective of the Survey:

  1. Identification of primary MCD and Private Schools
  2. No. of disabled and non disabled children admitted
  3. Develop Contacts
  4. Meetings with Principal and teachers
  5. Interaction and Motivation
  6. Confirmation and Follow up.
