Yesterday, four eager youth participated in the first session of on-site, school garden-based, outdoor science since 2020! Two additional youth are already signed up for the second session on Friday.
The Dirt Girls program has a solid structure consisting of:
During the team challenge, we did an activity I call "finding words in nature." Teams or partners are given a word and they are encouraged to source material from the nearby environment to spell the word. It's an activity that blends science observation, creative expression, communication and courage.
We made the words HOPE and LOVE. I liked how one Dirt Girls member described HOPE: "it's like a belief that something will happen." I couldn't agree more! I am hoping that the post-pandemic phase of this program continues to build momentum because I believe all youth need safe outdoor spaces to grow their science identities!
By July I'll have a full report on the sunflowers we planted, the native plants identified, and the trees we studied.
Thank you for sharing the LOVE of this program with your recurring donation.
