Push Back 1200 Child Marriages in India

by Dance4life

In India, a lack of awareness of the deep consequences of early marriages amongst young adolescent girls and their community continues to enable this cultural practice. In this program dance4life will create safe spaces where young people and their parents are comfortable to discuss sensitive topics. They will be educated and motivated to take action for social change. We will work with 1,200 adolescents and 100 community members in the remote area of Madhya Pradesh, India.

Early marriage is a harmful practice that severely violates the rights of women and girls. Its prevalence is alarming since the negative consequences can be devastating for those who experience it, their families, communities and wider society. Girls are often cut off from their social circle, they stop school to have children and take care of their family, disregarding their future dreams. In order to protect these girls dance4life has an approach that reaches out to girls and their community.

Our edutainment and empowerment approach enhances a comprehensive four-step method that focuses on building the confidence of young people within the area of sexuality and relationships. It is youth-appropriate and recognizes the power of peer-to-peer learning, mentoring and engagement with adults. Our positivity addresses values, attitudes and life-skills that empower young people and their environments to practice, act and influence change within themselves, their peers and adults.

Long-Term Impact

The project will build the knowledge, confidence and personal leadership skills of 1200 young girls, allowing them to make conscious decisions about their sexual health and future. They will be able to articulate their needs and have more decision making power. Which they will spread further to hundreds of others in their circle of influence - peers, parents, community - and they too will be able to break out of barriers that hold them back from becoming leaders of their own lives.
