City Year Washington, DC supports civic engagement and service projects across the district. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 18, 2016, is a "day on" for City Year. Each year, City Year honors the legacy of Dr. King by organizing a day of service for nearly 1,000 community and corporate volunteers.
In just one day, volunteers will transform high-need schools into more engaging, educational and vibrant places for students to learn and play.Service projects will include painting murals, maintaining playgrounds, building benches and planting green spaces.
Each year, our service days provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in value to local schools and community centers. In the 2014-15 school year, City Year facilitated over 11,000 hours of volunteerism from over 2,000 volunteers.
