Project #24911

Help educate and feed 14 children in Cambodia

by Cambodian Women's Development Agency

Until recently CWDA ran a safe shelter for young women at risk of trafficking. This new project will focus on helping children that are vulnerable to trafficking. These children come from disadvantaged and poor rural families who lack the means to send their children to school. The project will support 14 children, providing them access to school and therefore improve their education. We will ensure families have the skills and resources to care for, nourish and keep their children safe.

Cambodia is a young, vibrant country. However many rural families in remote villages simply can't cope with the pressures of feeding and educating their children. Unicef states that 20% of the population earn less than $1.25 per day. The parents' dire economic situation does not allow their children to continue studying. All of these factors increase the risk of young people dropping out of school to help their families work the land or becoming vulnerable to traffickers.

Cambodian Women's Development Agency conducted research and scoping into two villages close to Phnom Penh, in Kandal Province. We have identified ten children from families who will most benefit from our support, and four further families of children who have stayed with us in the Safe shelter and will now be reintegrated to their communities. We will support families to ensure that their children can stay in education - providing school materials, school uniforms, shoes and a bicycle.

Long-Term Impact

CWDA will be able to provide an education to children who are at high risk of dropping out of school due to their low socio-economic status. As a result they are less likely to fall into the hands of traffickers who would exploit them. Supporting the most vulnerable children and families to complete their education will relieve the economic burden of families who are too poor to educate their children. We estimate that through supporting fourteen families this will affect over 100 individuals
