Due to the rurally isolated nature of the county of Cumbria, and the fact that many sporting competitions for talented athletes performing at regional level or above are held outside of the county, many amateur athletes from Cumbria struggle to raise sufficient funds to train and compete, and therefore do not reach their full potential. This lack of funds can contribute to athletes dropping out of sport, thereby impacting negatively on their levels of aspirations and ambition.
By increasing financial support to more talented athletes from across the county, levels of aspiration will be increased, with more young people being provided with support to progress to regional, national and even international level training and competition. In turn, this will encourage more young people to continue to progress in their sport, and raise the profile of those achieving, to further inspire others to follow.
The fund will help more young people to follow their dreams of becoming high level international athletes in their chosen sport. The fund seeks to support 100 athletes each year in their development, learning skills, improving technique, and increasing levels of aspiration for themselves and others. By ensuring the continued availability of the fund, athletes showing potential will be funnelled into the scheme, ensuring that financial issues do not negatively impact their development.
