Summary

This project strengthens goat livestock breeding for young households in the villages of SEBELE and KIKONDE in the territory of Fizi, South Kivu Province in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The good practice of goat breeding is one of the sources of important revenue for the peasants of our country. Thus, we will train and then grant the rotational credit of 150 goats to 50 young households in these two villages with three goats per household.

Challenge

Farmers in our country are neither supervised nor monitored. Not trainings to improve their production, in short, they are abandoned to their sad spells. Young farmers, on the other hand, underestimate agricultural activity because they are non-remunerative, preferring to go to the urban centers or engage in mafia activities and the way of emigration. From goat livestock breeding, their income can change significantly and opt to stay in the village.

Solution

We will first select the top 50 beneficiaries of goat credits, with 25 young households per target village. Then, the training on the habitation of the goats, how to feed them, how to care for them and how to constitute a cooperative of the breeders. Will follow the purchase and award of animals (goats) and kits of veterinary products. In the interval of eighteen months, we hope that each beneficiary will have multiplied his flock of 3 goats by 3 or 4 to have at least 9 goats.

Long-Term Impact

This project is a revolving credit. After eighteen months, the number of beneficiaries will certainly be increased from 50 households to at least 80 households. As goat meat is the most widely consumed in the region, beneficiaries of these credits will increase goat meat production in the region and then increase their income. Farmers' co-operatives will be formed and new ideas on raising large livestock will be born.
