Creative Youth Boot Camp (3rd Edition)

Summary

In two years of running the three-week Street Project Foundation Creative Youth Boot Camp, we have trained two hundred young people aged 16 to 25 years old from low-income backgrounds in Lagos, Nigeria and placed 50% of them on internships and with mentors. Three things happen, they either start up their own enterprise, secure a job or have a clear direction of their career path. For the third edition, we plan to train another 100 youth and teach them how to turn their talent into an enterprise.

Challenge

According to Nigeria Bureau of Statistics, Youth Unemployment in Q3 2016 is 49.7%. 18.3 million of youth workforce population out of 40.16 million is unemployed or underemployed. 59.9% of Nigerians in labour force aged 15-24years were either unemployed or underemployed. Unemployment in urban cities like Lagos where the population is over 18million people is higher than rural areas.

Solution

Street Project Foundation's Creative Youth Boot Camp is a capacity building initiative for performance inclined youths from ages 16-25years, who come from low-income backgrounds and live in poor communities. The training workshops are designed to help participants turn their creative talent into an enterprise. The most outstanding youths are given opportunities to intern with creative based organizations and all participants are connected to mentors who are specialists in their field of interest

Long-Term Impact

We intend to replicate our Creative Youth Boot Camp model across cities in Nigeria. Currently we are training a minimum of 100 youths annually. By year 2020 our goal is to train 500 annually across three cities and connecting 50% of them to jobs or get them to start a creative business.
