2014 Serving Up Success Summer Program
This week marked the start of the fifth week of our nine-week 2014 Serving Up Success Summer Program. This summer Scholar Athletes have been challenged to study different biomes and learn what it takes to survive in each environment.
We began our learning adventure on a deserted island, then found ourselves marooned on a mountain top, only to end up on a space station. We landed back on earth to find ourselves in the depths of the rainforest, after enduring the rainforest we are currently learning what it takes to survive adrift in the ocean.
Each day of learning takes a different approach from what many students experience at school. We emphasize student led learning, where a student or group of students are presented with a challenge and can then experiment and find a solution on their own. We hope to enable each student to love investigating and coming up with creative solutions to simple and difficult problems alike!
SummerSlam Junior Tournaments: Survivor Series
Each weekend Scholar Athletes ages eight and up compete with other juniors from across the greater Portland area in low-cost sanctioned USTA 10 & Under and Junior Challenger Tournaments hosted at St. Johns Racquet Center, home of PAST&E. By keeping the cost at a third of the average rate of junior tournament fees, our eight week summer tournament series gives over 200 children the opportunity to experience tournament play. These tournaments allow PAST&E to fulfill its mission to keep the sport of tennis accessible to our Scholar Athletes and other low-income families.
