Challenge

Kabarole district is one of the districts in Uganda with high HIV prevalence of 11% compared to national average of 7.3% (UAIS 2011). Majority of the people infected are the youth who were born with HIV and those who acquired it later in their teenage age. YAWE mobilized the HIV positive youth to offer them skills for self reliance since majority of them missed opportunity for formal education. Because of stigma and discrimination and lack of skills these youth find it a difficult to get a job

Solution

YAWE foundation established training centre for the youth to learn skills and help them to set small group projects/businesses. One of the viable projects YAWE has put in Place a Bakery which is estimated to employ 50 youth on a daily basis. These youth will have a sustainable livelihood and the project will sustain itself once the initial capital has been invested because the income will be re-invested to ensure its continuity

Long-Term Impact

This project will impart skills to the youth in basic baking and it will solve unemployment of 50 youth. It will also build self esteem of young people living with HIV to improve their competitiveness and also improve their quality of life.
