The climate crisis has brought a massive wildfire to Yanggu, South Korea. The ecosystem has been completely destroyed, and it will take 30 years to recover. Yanggu, located in the center of the Korean Peninsula, holds a peaceful implication as the geographical center of the nation. Additionally, it has been heavily impacted by the climate crisis as a border region. We aim to restore the damaged forest and cultivate awareness of the importance of ecology and peace by creating a Forest of Peace.
The climate crisis has brought a large-scale wildfire to Yanggu, a border area. Dry weather and strong winds quickly spread the fire, damaging 716 ha of forest. Border areas have limited access, which help preserve ecosystems, but on the other hand, they face challenges in management, making them vulnerable to the impacts of the climate crisis. Additionally, in divided nations, the climate crisis not only leads to ecosystem destruction but also exacerbates conflicts, posing a threat to peace.
We will create a Forest of Peace that symbolizes nature and peace on the Korean Peninsula. The fund supports to plant trees in the damaged areas and establish infrastructure to cultivate the forest. This will be conducted in the form of an education and volunteer program to gain people's participation and foster empathy for ecology and peace. Additionally, the fund helps to host an international conference on the themes of ecology and peace in border areas to attract sustained attention.
The Forest of Peace will become a hub network for maintaining peace on the Korean Peninsula. By creating the forest, it helps to restore the ecosystem of border areas. In addition, it conveys to people the meaning of healing, recover and the awareness of the importance of peace. This project will contribute to global citizenship by engaging people in addressing the common global challenge of climate crisis while simultaneously contributing to the maintenance of peace on the Korean Peninsula.
