by Plymouth Healing Communities Vetted since 2016

Summary

In the United States, mental illness is a top cause of homelessness. Affordable housing is only PART of the solution to ending homelessness for people living with disabling mental health conditions; heathy social connections are key to housing stability and well-being. PHC integrates companionship with attractive, comfortable housing to create vibrant circles of care that support residents in their recovery. Challenge

On any given night in the US there are over half a million people experiencing homelessness and nearly 30% are suffering from chronic mental illness. Many rely on high-cost public services for their survival and end up cycling through hospital emergency rooms, detox centers, shelters and jails. In Seattle, PHC offers a life-giving alternative of affordable housing integrated with heart-to-heart companionship. Our mission is to create community, circles of care, and stable housing for residents.

Solution

Companionship at PHC works! We value residents for their uniqueness and depth as individuals and we see past their homelessness and chronic mental illness. Our staff and 30+ volunteer companions help our residents create circles of care and friendship through one-on-one and group outings, social events, learning opportunities, and just daily living. These genuine and enduring relationships help reduce hospitalizations (down 82%) and keep 92% of residents stable in housing for 3+ years.

Long-Term Impact

We know that affordable housing integrated with true companionship helps adults with chronic mental illness stay stable in housing and improves qualify of life. Housing stability is essential to recovery and to a healthy belonging within a community. PHC's companionship model is transformative for both our residents and volunteers, who recognize and honor the dignity of each person and become life-long advocates for mental health services and supportive housing.
