South Africa's environment is severely touched by poverty, pollution and poaching. DAKTARI's Outreach Program aims to expand our impact from within the community. By taking an approach to empower and involve the local people, we believe we can support and improve both the quality of life in the village and better the future of the upcoming generations. Through initiatives with the municipality and biweekly environmental lessons at the high schools and preschools, we are making a difference.
Limpopo has a large area of South Africa's natural resources, yet it is known to be the poorest, least educated area of the country. According to recent stats, the unemployment rate lies at 49%. Around 60% of people live below the poverty line (UN definition: < $1.25/day). It is no surprise that, in terms of poaching activity, Limpopo has been amongst the third highest province in the country for the past 3 years. Education and empowerment are best strategy to tackle these issues.
By continuing their environmental studies via our Outreach Program, the children can further their involvement with DAKTARI and continue exploring environmental topics every week. We have gone further to support these youths in applying for further education and employment, thereby improving their quality of life and outlook. Moreover, we closely work with the community and the municipality to establish programs and initiatives to better the village and its 3,500 residents as a whole.
Our project is already showing great results. The children who attend the environmental lessons have gone on to take action against poaching and animal cruelty within their village. Moreover, the continued efforts in working with the village have had great results with regards to cleanliness and domestic animal welfare. In addition to this we want to improve the outlook into the future of both the students and the community as a whole by providing professional outcomes and career guidance!
