The communities around the Quepos region in Costa Rica face many challenges, both socially and economically. This project seeks to assist the children from these communities through partnerships with schools and community centres. We offer students access to additional support, both academically and socially, an inspiring educational environment full of stimulating educational resources and a healthy breakfast to get their days' started off just right.
Schools in the Quepos area are very under-resourced and, as a result, most students are only able to attend half days. They often come to school with empty stomachs due to their difficult home circumstances. These challenges compound and mean that students aren't receiving the best education possible. Many students don't attend school past elementary level and have only ever had access to very basic subjects.
We seek to improve school infrastructure as well as community relations in El Cocal. We have a community centre, healthy breakfast club (HBC) & an ongoing education program. Funds are used to renovate & build learning spaces, roll out the HBC to some of the poorest children in El Cocal and for general maintenance & supplies. We have worked with many local schools & in 2016, we will work with 1 partner who needs the most support so that we can have maximum impact.
Working in partnership with local schools & communities, this project will improve the quality of education received through our programme focusing on life skills like Social Emotional Learning. Our curriculum develops some of the key skills such as empathy & respect. This is not something that is always taught at home or school, which is where GVI steps in. At our partner school, we will improve linguistic skills, social well-being & nutrition which will have long-term developmental impact.
