Exciting Sanyuka Fitness programs attracts a huge community base to a regular physical activity at the youth center! (Sanyuka is a Lugandan word meaning Be Happy). The first of its kind in the rural community. Normally the rich go the gyms for a pay while here it’s absolutely free of charge.
In rural communities, Individual’s day-to-day activities may involve physical labour (e.g. gardening, construction, collecting water, etc). But this does not mean that they are obtaining all the benefits that they could be from doing dedicated physical activity like circuit, Yoga and Zumba.
Yoga is a Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline, a part of which, including breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures, is widely practiced for health and relaxation
Zumba is an aerobic fitness program featuring movements inspired by various styles of Latin American dance and performed primarily to Latin American dance music.
Some Participants who come to classes on a regular basis benefit from weight control, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, reduced risk for type 2 diabetes, reduced risk of some cancers, strengthen bones and muscles, improved mental health, and improved agility.
There are additional benefits that can be obtained from participating in group exercise. Group exercise is typically described as exercise performed by a group of individuals led by an instructor. Research has found that there are added benefits to be obtained from group exercise. For example, there is a sense of cohesion that leads people to work harder and have better attendance to classes. People are found to have elevated moods when they exercise in groups, potentially due to the release of the same chemicals in our body that make other group activities (such as religious gatherings) so enjoyable for some people.
One of the participants an adult woman and a mother in her words said “ its more private and interesting when you exercise together in a bigger hall than running around the whole village.
