Cancer is the number one killer disease of mankind. It kills more people than HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. The worldwide burden of cancer doubled between 1975 and 2000 and is set to double again by 2020. It is also forecasted that by 2030, there will be more than 21 million new cases.

In Nigeria, over 100,000 Nigerians are diagnosed with cancer every year, out of which about 80,000 die due to late detection. The Nigerian cancer death ratio of 4 in 5 is one of the worst in the world. Cancer and related diseases kill more people than all other causes of death in Nigeria. Tris situation are worst off in rural communities in the Niger Delta, with special focus on communities in Rivers State, faced ;lack of awareness , pollution., risky health behaviors, poverty, stigmatizations.


The activities to be carried out in ameliorating this problem are; Participatory Baseline Survey Community mobilization and Sensitizations: Selection and Training of 5 community volunteers as Inter Personal Communicators (IPCs) and 4 Primary Health Workers on cancer awareness, prevention and control measures. Integration of Cancer primary prevention into Primary Health Care delivery services, screening and referrals, House to house engagement by IPCs: Support for palliative meas

Long-Term Impact

The long term impact of this project on the community are; Increase awareness of cancer menace among low-income women Early detection and screening among targets, early presentation and detection of The following problems would be solved Believes and myths towards cancer menace. Low cancer awareness Lack of nearby primary health facilities. (Linkage to health facilities shall aid in addressing this issue) Late detection and literacy levels on cancer related illness.
