Climate change adaptation-Panama rural livelihoods

By Natura Foundation | Natura Foundation

Our work is permanent and committed. We continue supporting several initiatives directed to promote and contribute with the sustainable development and natural resources conservation in key watersheds, taking into account the climate change effects, which are modifying the rain cycle affecting agricultural production, access to water, exacerbating land degradation and lots of biodiversity reducing the environmental services they provide to local communities.

During 2014 Natura has follow processes in prioritized areas, such as: Panama Canal Watershed (Cirí Grande y Trinidad Subwatershed), Chiriquí Viejo and Santa María Watersheds, through our partners to develop conservation site plans in Caisan Subwatershed and environmental education actions, specifically in Caisan Microwatershed (Chiriquí Viejo), and in Gallito Mircrowatershed (Located in Bulaba, Santa María Watershed). Both processes are participatory and involve local communities and other key stakeholders, identifying and threats for ecosystems. On June, the site plans was finished and alternatives to manage and reduce some of the environmental impacts and pressures are identify and ready to begin the development of specific actions on the field. At the end of 2014, at least 2 new projects will begin in those watersheds to attend degraded soils and restoration jointly with the community.

Natura Foundation maintain its effort to support technically and financially on-going projects in sensitive areas, during the first semester we follow up 16 projects providing: maintenance for 100 hectares reforested in Santa María watershed, reforested and giving maintenance to 170 hectares in the Panama Canal Watershed, and improving life quality in rural families with the construction of 100 ecological stoves in Ciri Grande and Trinidad, Panama Canal Watershed. During this semester 4 projects are finishing.

¡Your support is important! Each contribution is valuable for us, and will help to restore ecosystems that provide healthy environment and services for our communities and biodiversity.
