The La Trinidad project was originally delayed because of questions over water rights of the La Trinidad spring. Ultimately, the community with the help of the local partner organization elected to purchase rights to a new spring near Santa Cruz.
The Santa Cruz Project began in late 2005. Initial project activities focused on community development and education. Initial activies included: * Election of a water administration board to oversee construction and maintenance of the new system. * Initiation of an intensive community hygiene and sanitation education program. * Construction of household latrines. * Construction of new water system.
New Water System: The new water system is nearing completion. To date, the spring has been capped and the main pipeline has been installed.
Next Activities: Over the next reporting period, the project will focus on finalizing the distribution network and installing individual water connections and washbasins.
Significant progress has also been made in establishing household latrines and increasing usage. More than half of the participating families have fully excavated their tanks and are part way through installing their new latrine.
