This project plans to build and provide water storage facilities (tanks) with an average capacity of 5,000 - 10,000 litres to 50 public schools in Arusha. Furthermore this project plans to drill low-cost water well in critically deprived public schools with very limited or virtually no access to clean water. Generally each public school has 2000 school children
Public schools in Tanzania experience clean water scarcity and poor sanitation for which are linked to transmission of water-born diseases. Also it affects school attendance and academic performance especially the girls who have reached pubert. Many studies have revealed that girls do not attend school during menstruationif clean and adequate latrines are not available On average children spend about 17 minutes fetching water at school Children in rural spend more time fetching water at school
At the outset, we are constructing water reservation tanks in public schools with very little access to clean water. Water tanks will: a) serve as catchment point of rain water. b)store water from drilled wells, basically in some locations drilled well run out of water during dry season. c) store water from government authorities which is available through rationing mechanism Schools with no access at all to clean water, this project will drill low cost water wells.
Increased access and utilization of portable water and appropriate hygiene and sanitation by 2020 for public schools in Arusha - Tanzania we will extend our project to other regions of Tanzania. Primarly we will adopt better water purification methods to treat water obtained from drilled wells and other sources so as to ensure school children obtain clean and safe drinking water and furthermore to promote positive hygiene behavior.
