In the Nyanza area, 82% of the inhabitants do not have sufficient access to clean water. Our project will support families and individuals living in the rural villages of Nyanza district. To solve the problem of lack of access to clean water, boreholes will be installed to provide clean water to around 1,000 individuals. This initiative aims to improve health and sanitation and costs USD 20,000 per borehole, making it a cost-effective way to improve the living conditions of many households.
About 2.2 billion people lack safe drinking water, a fundamental human right (UN SGD6). In Rwanda, universal access to clean water is a top priority for health, nutrition, and economic growth. Nyanza District has 77,522 households, with half being children. 82% of Nyanza residents lack clean water, especially in villages where people are poor and must walk hours for unreliable water. Despite Rwanda's water resources, many are inaccessible, showing a gap between availability and accessibility.
We will install boreholes in key locations to provide clean water to about 1,000 people each, significantly reducing the distance rural families in Nyanza must travel for clean water. These boreholes will deliver safe drinking water that requires no filtration or heating, and will enhance sanitation, hygiene, and overall health. Access to clean water will improve living conditions and foster further positive changes in the villages, making a significant impact on daily life and well-being.
Rwanda's water supply is really big and can provide beneficiaries with clean water for a lifetime and beyond. The cost of a borehole is about $20,000, which means that the cost of providing beneficiaries with clean water for life is about $20 per person. This is one of the best cost-benefit ratios possible, ensuring sustainable and long-term prosperity and improved living conditions for beneficiaries, as well as a really good and cost-effective way to improve the lives of many households at once
