Kalehe Territory in South Kivu was recently hit by flooding which claimed the lives of more than 450 people, and more than 5,000 missing up to now, and destroyed three entire villages. This urgent appeal for funding will provide access to clean water, build shelter for the survivors, support health centers with equipment, and build schools, it will also focus on other urgent humanitarian assistance and help the affected communities to develop mechanism for resilience.
We estimate more than 30,000 who were displaced by the flooding in Kalehe and are living in dire conditions. Despite the fact that the DRC Government has done what could, the assistance that has been provided by the government and some NGOs is not yet enough to respond to the basic problems of people. People lost everything in just one second and it may require various interventions from various actors to help them rebuild their lives through relocation to safer place, and build a house.
This project will provide clean water and build more wells where the community will collect water from, build shelters of homes for most vulnerable people such as the sick, the elderly, single women and orphans among others. This project will also build a school, and offer medical equipment to health centers among other things.
In long-term this project will also focus on fighting against poverty among the affected communities, and then it will end from there. In brief we believe that once people are settled in one place, they can access basic services and are empowered to address poverty, then this project can end.
