The kitchens in rural primary schools in Kakamega are characterized by the use of open fire which are low-grade fuels and inefficient stoves, resulting in significant indoor air pollution. The casual staffs who cook in these environments are exposed to smoke for prolonged periods, leading to respiratory diseases, eye irritations, and other health-related issues. They frequently visit local health centers suffering from respiratory diseases due to inhaling smoke.
