In Tanzania poor sanitation, water scarcity, inferior water quality and inappropriate hygiene behaviour are disastrous for young school children. This project aims at increasing the level of knowledge towards healthy hygiene and sanitation practices for clean and safe drinking water to 5000 primary school children in rural Ifakara. The project will reduce waterborne disease by 60 % among school children and increase school attendance, performance and ensure child's right to education.
In Tanzania, millions of children are at risk due to lack of safe drinking water and hygiene behaviour. A survey revealed that 6% of the schools have no latrines, 84% have no hand washing facilities, 86% have no water for hand washing and 38% of the schools have no water supply.Inappropriate hygiene behaviour is disastrous for young school children. This situation not only affects children's health and physical development also increase poor school attendance, performance and school drop out.
Through facilitating series of training workshops, to school students, parents and teachers. Encourage them the use of better local water purification methods to ensure clean and safe drinking water practices behaviour for school students. Initiate a radio public campaign program about clean and safe drinking water for school children to promote positive hygiene behaviour. Improving hygienic behaviour in schools is essential for keeping children in school, and ensuring their right to education.
To reduced WASH-related diseases such as diarrhea, worms and schistomosoisis which reduces school drop out. This project will increase cognitive function, attention and more time to the learning task. Also, increase dignity and safety particularly for girls and for people with disabilities by improving adequate facilities to deal with girls' hygiene needs during menstruation period. Schools with better hygiene, access to clean and safe drinking water ensure children's right to education.
