City in the Community Soccer Program

by City in the Community Foundation

One third of children in New York City's public elementary schools are obese or overweight. The City in the Community Soccer Program combines soccer with education about health and nutrition, in order to help young people to improve their fitness and live healthier lives. Already supported by Cityzens Giving, your donation will help City in the Community Soccer Program to continue the brilliant work of the leaders and give them a platform to help even more young people in New York City.

Obesity has doubled among children and quadrupled among teenagers over the past 30 years in the USA and prevalence is highest among boys and children from low income families. A key factor is a lack of safe spaces to play, limited exercise and unhealthy diets. Obesity increases the likelihood of various medical conditions including heart disease, diabetes and other long-term illness.

The City in the Community Soccer Program will be delivered in the Bronx and Queens, specifically targeting the most at-risk children. Through a structured curriculum, we will use soccer to get young people active on the field and will deliver vital information in the classroom, teaching participants about healthy eating and living. The program also provides safe spaces for participants to engage in sport and to make new friends in areas where places to play are limited.

Long-Term Impact

City in the Community Soccer Program will impact the lives of 500 young people annually. They will have will have improved football skills and greater knowledge around nutrition and how to live a healthy lifestyle. A core group of young leaders from the local community will manage and deliver the project, gaining further experience, skills and qualifications.
