Our City by City strategy helps local organizers move hometown governments into climate emergency mode. Cities are often the source of national progress, from minimum wage to civil rights. Local wins inspire other communities to follow and demonstrate the demand for the necessary national mobilization to save humanity and the natural world from the climate crisis.
Climate disruption is already causing drops in food production and water availability, which threaten to destabilize countries and whole regions, leading to failed states and hundreds of millions of refugees. Despite this, most climate organizations approach the crisis by asking what is politically possible rather than what is scientifically and morally necessary. Our moral duty, and enlightened self-interest, tell us that we must undertake a rescue effort to restore a safe climate now.
City by City is a volunteer-driven campaign with a proven record for transforming what is possible in responding to the climate crisis. City by City guides and supports local organizers throughout the country as they build the power to lead their cities into emergency mode to initiate a program to rapidly cut greenhouse gas emissions and begin removing carbon from the atmosphere. City councils are in a position to demonstrate to other governments how this emergency must be heroically tackled.
City by City offers a unique opportunity to create coalitions, raise expectations of what is possible, and "move the movement." In 2018, we are working to rapidly scale up and spread the campaign for climate emergency declaration to at least 25 more cities, with a particular focus on California and New York. We will be working toward building power for state-level mobilizations in 2019, as this local effort must be a quick step onward to federal and eventually international mobilization.
