ChildVoice: Loans for War-Affected Child Mothers

by ChildVoice International

ChildVoice will offer small business loans to young war-affected women and former child soldiers in Northern Uganda so that they can create a future for themselves and their children.

Although the girls have obtained the vocational skills to create businesses such as bakeries, hair salons and tailoring shops, they do not have the necessary start-up capital. Traditional lending organizations are not an option for these who are among the poorest in society. The lack of capital will cause them to struggle to send their children to school and provide themselves and their children with basic provisions such as food, clothing and health care.

When women are given access to loans, an average of 5 other people also benefit as women are more likely to use profits to help their families. Providing small loans for these 30 young women can mean improving life for 150 or more people in need.

Long-Term Impact

Revitalization of the economy as Northern Uganda struggles to recover from the decades of war. As the women succeed, they will gain confidence and self-sufficiency, breaking the vicious cycle of poverty which has characterized so much of their lives.
