Summary

This project supports St. Vincent's Rescue Centre in Kibera, Kenya. The Rescue Centre provides a safe and loving home to 15-20 boys and girls ages 5-17 years who have been orphaned, often due to HIV/AIDS, or have experienced abuse and/or neglect in their homes.

Challenge

HIV/AIDS and poverty have resulted in high numbers of orphans and other vulnerable children in Kibera. Children who have lost parents often go to live with extended families. Many of these already over-burdened extended families struggle to provide for children's basic needs and some fail to provide a safe and healthy environment. In the most severe cases, children are pulled out of school and suffer from neglect and abuse at the hands of the very caregivers who are supposed to care for them.

Solution

The project provides immediate shelter for children who have experienced abuse or neglect, as well as those who have been orphaned and do not have extended family to take them in. At the rescue centre, children find a caring home where they can sleep safely every night. They receive proper nutrition, health care (including HIV treatment for those who are HIV-positive) and are sent to school. Children also participate in various extracurricular activities (i.e., tennis lessons, youth groups, etc)

Long-Term Impact

The Rescue Centre provides children the tools they need for long-term survival: an opportunity to grow up in a home free of abuse, to receive adequate nutrition and medical care, and to pursue their education. Children are cared for by our house mother, Grace, and live in a household structured similar to that of the typical Kenyan family. All children attend primary or secondary school and whenever possible are reunited with guardians or extended family when it can be done in a safe manner.
