Laughter as the Best Medicine

Chloe & Chemo Pal Melissa
Chloe & Chemo Pal Melissa

Long, lonely days spent in the hospital surrounded by machines and unfamiliar faces can be a scary and confusing experience for a very small child. A special friendship can make all the difference. So when 15-month-old Chloe met her Chemo Pal mentor Melissa, it was exactly the new kind of medicine she needed – laughter.

Through months of chemotherapy, Chloe and Melissa colored cheerful pictures and built castles with building blocks, two of Chloe’s favorite activities. They became great friends who loved to laugh and spend time together.

On the day that Chloe graduated from chemotherapy, she and Melissa said “goodbye chemo and hello sunshine!”

Thanks to supporters like you, our award-winning Chemo Pal Mentor Program can give kids a dependable, caring friend to lean on and parents a much-needed break to grab a cup of coffee, take a nap, or spend time with their other children.

Last year, CCA’s Chemo Pal program served 259 families, a 22% increase from the previous year.

With your support we can match even more children and teens one-to-one with compassionate adults who offer supportive relationships throughout their chemotherapy or other treatments.
